For your information, please see also timetable, and flyer of the Summer school.

  • LAAS-CNRS transferred an RF MEMS Reliability platform to Alcatel Alenia Space

LAAS-CNRS has developped an original reliability platform that consists to monitor the microwave behavior of electrostatic actuated ohmic and capacitive switch versus the DC voltage ranging from -60 V to + 60 V. The platform features different types of stress (unipolar, bipolar, cycling with different frequency, DC stress). The stress can be applied with respect to ambient temperature ranging from -50°C to 100°C and under neutral gaz. It has been observed that dielectric charging effect turns out to a shift of the actuation voltage and it has been demonstrated that the kinetic of the shift of the actuation voltage is an important parameter that is representative of the degradation mechanism. Additionnally, it has been shown that the contact behavior drives the stress intensity through the effective electrical field. The main degradation mechanism that has been observed is related to Poole Frenkel effect. A figure of merit has been proposed that takes into account only the intrinsic properties of the dielectric and that allows to select devices with respect to their reliability performance and to determine the life time of the device. The test set has been developped by a PhD student Samuel Melle and by David Dubuc associate professor at LAAS-CNRS and Toulouse University. It is fully controlled through a computer and has been succesfully transferred to Alcatel Alenia Space. This work has been partly supported by the Network of Excellence AMICOM.
For more details, you can contact David Dubuc at LAAS-CNRS, 7 avenue du Colonel Roche, 31077 Toulouse Cedex, email: [email protected]

2. GOSPEL event:
GOSPEL Bio-Techno Workshop 2006, 27 - 29 September 2006, Rome, Italy (Details...)
The GOSPEL Bio-Techno Workshops are designed to bring together Scientists from biological olfaction and technical gas sensing. This approach reflects the fact that "Artificial Olfaction", meaning advanced gas chemical sensing can only overcome current limitations with better understanding of the biological processes, which enable the outstanding performance of the this sense. This refers to the signal processing rather than to the receptors. Consequently the research within GOSPEL targets to find bio-inspried algorithms and to apply them signals from technical gas sensors in order to solve demanding applications.

5. PATENT DfMM- Influencing the future of European NanoManufacturing

A Working Group NanoManufacturing was established in May 2005 with the European Commission offering a platform to exchange knowledge and information between research institutions, universities, industrial companies and networks. Its main objective is the coordination of the European nanotechnology manufacturing community, connecting it to the European equipment community. It will concentrate on the Manufacturing of nanotechnology and combine results of research and newly acquired knowledge from all nano-oriented groups with skills in the equipment segment. NEXUS and the NoE on Design for Micro & Nano Manufacture (PATENT-DfMM) have been involved from the initial phase.

To stimulate future projects on NanoManufacturing to be funded by the EC and national governments, the Working Group NanoManufacturing plans to generate a long-term vision in the form of a roadmap, establish a European Stakeholder Platform and develop a Strategic Research Agenda.

Readers are encouraged to support the activities of the Working Group by contributing their specific views into the online questionnaire at:  www.nanomanufacturing.eu by 26 May 2006.

5. Proposals for ESF Research Networking programmes (Details...)
Deadline: 30 October 2006; 17.00hrs CET

ESF Research Networking Programmes (formerly known as Scientific Programmes) are a strategic instrument for bringing together leading scientists and young promising researchers around frontline research themes in which cooperation creates demonstrably better science. They allow scientists whose research is fully funded elsewhere to share results and explore possibilities for developing new cooperative research projects. The longer term cooperation in Programmes, usually of 5 years, in combination with the variety of activities which can be funded, makes them an excellent mechanism for building new interdisciplinary research communities. This interdisciplinarity will be specifically encouraged. (ESF Strategic Plan 2006-2010).

To strengthen the strategic role of this instrument the ESF has (since 2005) one joint annual call for ESF Research Networking Programmes proposals for all scientific domains, with a deadline usually at the beginning of November. The 2006 Call is open can can be accessed here.
