Initiated in 2002 as a meeting of Slovenian scientists working in the field of nano, the Slonano meeting has developed into a regional meeting with participants from Slovenia, Italy, Austria and Croatia. This year, all European researchers working in the field of nanoscience are invited to take part in the meeting. Co-organized by Jožef Stefan, Institute and National Institute of Chemistry (Ljubljana, Slovenia), the meeting will take place October 24 - 25, 2005, at the Jožef Stefan Institute.

Mains topics are:

  • Synthesis and functionalization of nanomaterials;
  • Characterization of nanomaterials;
  • Nanosensors;
  • Biological nanosystems and macromolecules;
  • Theory and modeling of nanosystems.

2. Euro DesignCon 2005, October 24-27, Munich, Germany (...more details)

3. The 3rd International Symposium on Nanomanufacturing, November 3-5, 2005, Nicosia, Cyprus (...more details)

International Symposium on Nanomanufacturing (ISNM), initiated at MIT in the USA (Cambridge, MA, April 2003) and continued at KAIST in Asia (Daejeon, Korea, November 2004), has emerged as the main global forum to address manufacturing issues at the nanoscale.

4. BioNanoMaT-Bioinspired Nanomaterials for Medicine and Technologies, November 23-24, 2005, Marl, Germany (...more details)

The interface between the established fields of nanotechnology and biotechnology is generating innovative nanomaterials, produced using functions and principles of self-assembly inspired by Nature. These new materials offer exciting new possibilities for the development of biochips, biolabels, drug delivery systems, nanoelectronics, and many other applications. Faster and more precise diagnostic tools will be possible, with benefits for public health. The importance of nanobiomaterials, however, reaches beyond the life sciences, finding many technical applications. Biosensors and nanoelectronics, for example, demonstrate how biological processes can be used to develop new structures and functions of technical importance.
This conference will cover the latest research results, and highlight successful transfers to industrial applications. Leading international experts will present their work in four sessions:

  • Drug Delivery and Imaging
  • Diagnostics
  • Nanoelectronics
  • Self Assembled Structures

2. DfMM Training Courses , 12-14 December 2005 at IEF, Paris, France (...more details)

A working knowledge of analysis tools and techniques is essential during the development of MEMS packages. This latest PATENT-DfMM course covers a wide range of methods of interest to current MEMS designers, and aims to give an introduction to engineers and scientists who have recently started work in this field. After an introduction to current packaging techniques and technologies, the course will focus on experimental and simulation techniques. The experienced presenters will cover the following:

  • Introduction to MEMS Packaging Techniques and Technology
  • Analysis Techniques for MEMS Packages
  • MEMS Package Simulation Techniques

3. NEXUS IP and NoE meeting, 5-6 Dec 2005, Paris (www.nexus-mems.com)

The 4th NEXUS IP and NOE meeting will be held in Paris on 5-6th December 2005. This event will present updates to the many major IP and NOE projects, particularly those where demonstration of hardware is possible. We will showcase the results of the recent call for East-West mini-projects. The November 2005 NEXUS Market Survey results will be presented. Finally, there will be an update of the situation with regard to Framework 7. The meeting will run from lunchtime to lunchtime, with lunches provided on both days. A social event will be organised on the evening of the 5th December. The agenda is being developed at present and the updated version will be available on the NEXUS website, where you can register to attend, and find further details.
Please note that The NEXUS Association annual meeting will be held from 10.30-12.00 on the morning of the 5th November, in the same location, and you are cordially invited to attend.

4. Workshop "The future of NOSE - a look at FP 7", 7 – 8 November 2005, Istanbul, Turkey (...more details)

The Network of Excellence on artificial Olfaction Sensing "NOSE II" organises a Workshop "The future of NOSE - a look at FP 7". The thematic network NOSE II is active in the field of Artificial Olfaction promoting the exchange between the researchers and the uptake by the industry. The last Workshop of NOSE II before its end (Nov 2005) will consider the future of research and developement in AO in regard to the upcoming Framework Program 7, the central R & D funding instrument of the European Commission from 2007 - 2013. The workshop will cover prospects of different application fields of chemical gas sensors as well as structural information and boundary conditions of FP 7 as far as this is known at the moment. Furthermore it shall function as a patform for new contacts in order to prepare future collaboration. The Workshop addresses academia and industry, it will provide information relevant to every body who plans to seek European Funding in this area.

Common section (general information)

1. Nanotechnology: Commission launches consultation on how best to assess health and environmental risks
(October 20, 2005)
Stakeholders are invited to comment on a scientific opinion on risk assessment methods for the products of nanotechnologies. The opinion, which is the first of its kind ever produced on this subject, was drawn up by the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR). Nanotechnology involves the controlled production of new materials which have one or more dimensions thousands of times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Industry is increasingly using nanotechnology for a wide variety of sectors, including healthcare, consumer products, information technology and the environment. The SCENIHR opinion concludes that some modifications will be necessary due to unique properties of products of nanotechnologies and highlights the need for case-by-case approach to risk assessment. It also identifies gaps in knowledge, especially regarding human exposure, health effect and the environmental impacts. The online consultation aims to gather feedback on the appropriateness of current risk assessment methods for nanotechnology products and how they can be improved. The consultation will run until 16 December 2005.

2. International quiz competition on nanotechnology
